Would you rather listen to a pastor tell a humorous story to convey a point in his message, or would you rather the pastor slap the point onto a slide and show everyone? While the pastor could do both (tell the story and reveal the main point on the slide), I believe without the slideshow, an audience remembers the point of the speech with less senses. Allow me to explain: With the slideshow, not only does the audience read the main points, but they hear it when the speaker says it out loud. However, a slideshow wouldn't be necessary if the speaker used imagery ("Picture this...") or real life examples (using tangible objects rather than pictures and words on a slideshow). All of this to say, a speech needs more than just words to keep an audience engaged, it is your job as a speaker to keep them engaged.
