Other countries are capitalizing on the American dollar because Nixon killed the gold standard. This has slowly caused a downward decline into a trade deficit where other countries see that America is borrowing a ton of money so they are investing in American dollars. The trade deficit is connected in this way to the spending deficit but they are not the same.
