Bible 12         Children’s Book Instructions

Objective: To create a children’s book that tells a compelling story that directly relates to the Christian faith. 

Class discussion:

What were some of your favorite children’s book when you were young? List 3-4. 

What makes a good children’s book?  Class list of 7 reasons.

 

Part 1

Requirements & Getting Started:

1. Create a Google Doc titled “ChildrensBookDraft_LastNameFirstName” and share it with pstrahm@blackhawkchristian.org

 

2. Page 1 of Google Doc should have your name at the top and be titled “IDEAS”

   A. Create a list of 5 possible themes that you may want to make your book about. 

            Examples: Forgiveness, bearing fruit, loving one another, salvation, identity, evangelism.

            Pick topics that you are passionate about and you believe are important for children to learn.

 

   B. For each theme, find 5 verses that relate to that theme.  Attempt to find a balance in your verses that range from OT history, wisdom, Gospels, and NT letters.

 

   C. For each theme, write a 2-3 sentence story idea that includes characters, setting, problem, climax, and solution.

 

3. Once have completed the above, select 2 of your 5 stories and themes to expand upon.

 

4. On a separate page for each of your 2 selected stories, create a rough draft of a thorough outline of how you would write this entire book.  Title these 2 as “ROUGH DRAFT OUTLINE 1 & 2”

It should include: how your book begins (introduction/attention grabber), characters, some dialogue or narrative, and a fully fleshed out setting – problem - and solution, how you would incorporate a minimum of 3 of your verses into the story, and a clear main point in your conclusion that is distinctly Christian in worldview.

Part 2

1. In agreement with Mr. Strahm, select 1 of your 2 stories.

2. Now it’s time to get into the details!  Map out your book in rough draft form. 

A. Mapping instructions:

Share page #’s, exact wording you would use, verses utilized (explicitly or subtly), and what kind of images and art you would put on each page.

Example:

            Page 1 –

Wording: “Billy was excited for today.  It was field trip day.  Billy loved field trips.  It was always a new adventure to ride the schoolbus. Today’s trip was to the planetarium.”

Verses: Psalms 24:1 The Earth is the Lord’s and everything in it.

Images: Billy is at his house packing his lunch.  He already is wearing his backpack and has an excited expression on his face.

 

B. Your story should consist of a minimum of 24 pages.

Part 3

1. Begin to make peer and teacher suggested edits to improve your rough draft.

2. Submit your final draft in a Google Doc titled “ChildrensBookFINAL_LastNameFirstName” and share it with pstrahm@blackhawkchristian.org

Part 4

*Now it’s time to design your book and put it into action.

1. Design your book and create art with any of the following websites:

https://www.storyjumper.com/

 

In addition, you may try:

 -utilizing AI image generations to help with your art (Canva, Firefly, Copilot, etc.)

 -drawing your own art and digitizing it.
