Supplies: You'll need 4 sheets of paper, 2 history or math books, a batch of pennies and 3 dominoes.

Work thru this geometry activity and put your data and drawings in a google doc to be shared with me.

  1. Include a sketch of each of your 5 bridges on your doc (Insert, drawing allows you to do this.
  2. Tell how many grams each bridge held before it collapsed.
  3. Tell what the terms tension and compression mean related to beams of buildings and bridges.

What to do: Google images of types of bridges and build these:

1. Beam  2.truss    3. single arch beneath the road, and 4. double arch bridge

5. Combo truss and single arch.

Leave a 6" gap between the books that support your road/bridge. The books represent the piers that support the bridge.  Load pennies on one at a time until the road gives way. Include the grams held by each bridge in your google doc.
