why does the government spend so much money on things they either already have or things they don't need? and yeah obviously we pay taxes and such but there's no way all of our taxes are making up for the prices of some things so where are they getting the money?

seems like a stupid question but i feel like its always been answered as "eh no clue, the government just does what it does" and quite frankly, that's annoying.

there has to be some type of reason why the government spends sooooo much money on things when they don't need to.

Hopefully chapter six cleared this up. In short, the special interest effect, short-sightedness effect, and the incentives available to all participants in the public sector decision making arena (voters, politicians, and bureaucrats) do not line up with economic efficiency.
