Chapter 6 Response

Bias is not always bad because some people may be biased towards you and we would always like people who are biased towards us but it is different when people are showing bias to other people when you are in a argument or other situations. Overall I think bias is not really a good thing and there is nothing we can do to avoid bias. In chapter 6 it said that scholars have done research to see if it was possible for humans to not show bias and it was impossible due to our family, friends, and beliefs that we all share separately.

I have never realized, but I am almost always showing bias. I cannot think of many times where I haven't shown at least a little bias towards a topic being discussed.

I agree that most of the time bias should be withheld from a speech because it makes your argument seem less credible, but I also think that for speeches like opinion, it is acceptable.

Great explanation, Jared! I do think it can be hard to avoid bias, however I actually think that if you show the opposing views on the situation, you can then demonstrate why you think otherwise. This not only demonstrates credibility, it also demonstrates a strong understanding of the subject and how your point may sound more plausible. And although bias is often used poorly, it can also be beneficial. Think of it this way: We are Christians. We believe to be in the world, but not of the world. This can also mean to avoid the desires of the flesh, or sinning. Now on the other hand, in a presentation over homework and the statistics, you wouldn’t want to have a bias, but rather show the opposing view and say why it is plausible. Another example would be the one Josiah used: if you are in a funeral or marriage, you don’t want to be negative or look down on a person, but the opposite. Overall, great job though, Jared!
