One of the biggest ways I believe to establish goodwill with your audience is by making a connection with them and discussing a topic that they can relate to. This can be demonstrated as for example I can greet the audience and thank them for coming , and then I can give them reasons why listening to my speech would benefit them.

Being able to connect to your audience is important, especially when establishing goodwill. You're spot on when you say that the audience wants to benefit from your speech and you can benefit from delivering it. Nice job!

I think being thanked for attending a speech would indeed establish goodwill. I personally would love to be thanked for it.

Making a connection with your audience is a perfect way to get them to enjoy you more as a person; as a result that are more likely to listen and take what you say serious.
