Playing with form or genre can be risky especially if you don't know what you're doing you can easily ruin something that is good. There are a lot of songs that use this and sound good but there are also a lot of songs that try it and sound bad. One song it sounds good with is Runaway by Kanye West. Runaway starts off with a continuous single piano key, lasting like 15 seconds, the key being played two seconds on repeat for those 15 seconds, then randomly the beat gets a lot more exciting, rather than the calm note from the piano. The contrast and anticipation for the song to start made it exciting.

I agree with you Grayson the end of runaway does throw me a little off guard because of the mood switch.

I have never heard that song, but the way you described it seems as though it would catch someone off guard. And I agree that playing with form and genre can be risky.
