- Does it make sense to exclude the elderly when trying to measure the progress of the middle class over time? Yes, most elderly in the middle class don't have an income anymore so they can become outliers when trying to find out how the middle class actually is doing.
- Why does it matter if the composition of the middle class is changing when trying to assess the performance of the economy? The average will always be changing so if their incomes are growing, the data for the whole middle class grows.
