what's the difference between the cpi and a gdp deflator?

The CPI and GDP deflator are both price indices (they measure inflation). CPI focuses on consumer spending, whereas the GDP deflator is more broad and includes things that the CPI leaves out (think things that companies buy, but you as a consumer don't).
