Chapter 4 Response

1) I landed on a topic for my opinion speech by thinking about things that were important to me and that I had strong opinions about. I've recently been getting frustrated when people lack basic financial skills, which led me to my opinion that high schoolers should have part time jobs. This train of thought is common sense to me. If you have a strong opinion on something, then it is typically pretty important to you, which is helpful to use as a topic for an opinion speech. I also made sure that my topic was relatable to my audience which helped narrow down some of the things I was passionate about.

2) I anticipate selecting topics for future presentations in a similar manner to how I picked my topic for the opinion speech. For the information and persuasive speeches, I plan on picking something that is relatable to both me and my audience. This topic will also be something I'm passionate about, so that the mood of the speech isn't boring. I might also try brainstorming or concept-mapping to help connect key ideas and themes to each other.

I definitely agree that picking a speech is easier when it's something you're passionate about. I tend to choose my topics on things that I love and less based on what the audience likes.
