When I think about a work of art that violates the audience's expectations, I think about a lot of artists and songs. But, the first song that came to my mind is called, "Me and Your Mama" by Donald Glover. The beginning of the song starts with the sounds of bells, triangles, and a calm piano. The song catches you off guard because out of nowhere the electric guitar comes in and the drums follow right after. This song goes from relaxing chill music to sort of a rock music vibe which was totally unexpected.
Even though I haven't heard the song I agree with you because a lot of songs do this and would catch me off guard too.
