When you are watching a movie, normally you can expect or predict what is about to happen next based on the genre. For example, the hero beats the villain or the couple finds true love. But what you normally don't expect is the plot twist. After watching, hearing, or reading the plot twist, the form of the genre completely changes (if done well) and you'll probably never see that story the same way again. In the movie, "The Empire Strikes Back," it is revealed to us that Lando Calrissian is Han Solo's friend and he provides help to Han and his friends. However, when Lando invites them to dinner, it turns out that he was working with the enemy, Darth Vader, and sets up an amazing plot twist to anyone who hasn't seen the movie before. The form shifted from hopeful to betrayal, a successful plot twist. It worked because we expected Lando to help his friends out, especially after all the hardships they have already been through trying to escape the Empire. While this form didn't change the genre, it still shifted the audience's expectations and mood.
