The AMA is the American Medical Association and was started in 1847. Their mission was to lobby the government to raise the medical standards required for someone to be a doctor. Their goal was to increase the medicine quality in the United States. This worked. What the association was not able to foresee was the negative side effects that would follow from lobbying for this. Because of these higher standards, this actually has caused much less people to become doctors. And because there are now less doctors but higher quality, this has caused the prices to increase very much. "The number of physicians per 100k in population decreased from 164 in 1910 to 125 in 1929 (24% decrease, 28% decrease since 1900)." The price of medicine rose over 2x, some argue this was just a side effect, others argue this was to get the doctors more money. They say that this was "The real reason: average doctor salary: $1000 in 1900, $6354 in 1929 (535% increase!)." So, although the AMA did increase the quality of US doctors, it decreased the amount of doctors and increased the price for doctors.

I agree with you! While the AMA did improve standards, it clearly led to fewer doctors and much higher prices, which had some serious negative effects.

Yes. The price increase is very disappointing. Many people are unable to go to places where they can afford treatment because those places do not exist.

I did not think that it could have just been a missight by the government, which I still do not want to give them the benefit of the doubt.

AHHHH Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz AGREES with how you take your stance. Its is shameful how PERRY the AMA wanted more dabloons in their pockets so the hurt the overall healthcare industry of the US by making it much harder to become a medical doctor.
