A movie that plays with form is Scott Pilgrim vs The World (although Titanic is a "close" second). The movie starts out as what seems like a cute, little rom-com where Scott Pilgrim meets this new girl in town named Ramona Flowers, and they'll live happily ever after. But then Scott finds out he must defeat all of Ramona's past seven ex's in order to date her, and the movie becomes more of an action movie. I think that the director/creator definitely pulled off this genre violation. It works because it's funny and different and a very engaging movie. I will say, I read the first volume of the comic series of Scott Pilgrim vs The World (which came out before the movie), and I thought it was about how Scott can get any girl he wants, and he's such an awesome dude because all these girls fall for him. So, I stopped reading the series, because I didn't really want to read that. Then I watched the movie, and I realized that Scott Pilgrim vs The World was not about what I had thought it was about. It was really about how everybody dates and breaks up and hurts people. I feel like this is another play with the idea of form, because unlike a rom-com, it doesn't really end with everybody happy and satisfied in their own loving relationships. It ends with a lot of emotional damage and self evaluation that leads the characters to ask for forgiveness. I love this movie, and I think it does a great job of violating genre and playing around with form.
