In my opinion, the biggest thing I look at when someone is speaking is their face. Let's say that one is talking about a very serious topic, but has a giddy or joyful look on their face the whole duration of their speech. I would begin to wonder if their was an underlying message the speaker was trying to say to me, or lose the ability to sympathize with the speaker. Tone of voice is the biggest thing for me when it comes to illustrating a point in a speech. If the tone is flat, the speaker loses authority in my eyes, and it seems that whatever point they were trying to make they do not care a whole lot about. Having a tone that matches what you are trying to emphasize is unarguably one of the most important parts of a good delivered speech.
