I have attended many wedding ceremonies and have heard several speeches from the best man/woman. The audience expects the best man and woman to celebrate and uplift the newly wed couple, along with poking some fun at them with past memories as well. These speeches are often successful when they have an idea of what to say, and are sometimes failures when the are given without preparation.

I agree. It's hard to be ready to give a speech and deliver it successfully without proper preparation or understanding of what the audience is expecting from you.

I would agree that preparation is still vital for toasts. Fortunately, I have not experienced a failure, but I know that if I am ever asked to give one I will put a lot of time to prepare my toast, so that I tell the funniest memories and most importantly have good, clear words of encouragement for the newlyweds.

I have only attended a couple weddings in my day. During those, the speeches about the bride/groom have been very uplifting and positive, leaving the audience with a happy picture of the subject of the speech.
